Introduction: new ways to send information to the Student Programmes Office
The staff portal is a web site for staff only - you can use it from anywhere with a web connection, and you'll need to log in. After this, as well as the events calendar, and University news, you can use the portal for various tasks related to academic work, such as entering student marks.
To get going, call up the portal and provide your username and password - this logs you into your staff portal account without further ceremony. If this doesn't work, ask the helpdesk to check that your staff account isn't disabled.
Help on getting going with the Student Programmes Office-related tasks
CAMS forms
The Staff Portal allows you to vanquish the CAMS forms. To get going with this, bring up the staff portal, look at the left hand menu, select 'Assessments' and complete various tasks ...
Enter Student Marks
Here's an instructional video on entering marks. The starting point is to select 'Assessments'. Then select 'Entry of Marks'. You'll then see a list of modules, select one to view a list of assessment items. Select the one with which you'll be working.
You'll now see a table displaying a list of students, and fields for marks and grades - simply add both mark and grade for each student.
Hint: use the 'Tab' key to move through this table - avoid reaching for the mouse, when you're ready to move to the next field, press the 'Tab' key.
Note: when you've entered marks on the system, select 'Next' and 'Finish' to ensure that they're saved. You can still return to the portal at a later date and revisit or even change the marks. Once completed, you can export a set of marks to a spreadsheet.
Frequently asked question: Why doesn't the grade appear automatically? Answer: because the staff portal is using this to validate your input - with you supplying both, the chances are that the system will then flag an errant mark before it gets any further.
Practise all this, using 'Staffstage', the test portal, without risk to real data
There's a test version of the staff portal that you can use for practise - use this in two ways:
Practise things like entering marks for students, risk free - anything you do on the test portal doesn't have any effect on real data.
The test portal 'Staffstage' runs 'The next version' of the portal software - investigate this and provide feedback to the information services team
Here's a link to the test staff portal, known as Staffstage. You'll know it's the test portal, because, once you've logged in to it, it displays the words "not live data!" with a yellow highlight, at the top of its page ...
When the staff portal doesn't work ...
Javascript
The staff portal uses something called 'Javascript', and it's possible that your web browser doesn't allow this to run. Here's a link that checks your
settings of Javascript. If Javascript is enabled for you, you'll see a message - if your web browser has javascript disabled, you'll see nothing - and the staff portal will not work for you.
If your web browser has Javascript disabled, you'll find a way to change the setting in the menu - perhaps 'Tools/Preferences' or 'Tools/Internet Options'.
The staff portal also needs your browser to accept things called cookies ...
Your browser's cache
Web browsers store local copies of web pages you download - so that when you revisit the page, it doesn't have to fetch another copy from elsewhere. Sometimes the cache starts causing confusion - if something's not working, try emptying your browser's cache - look for the control for this in the menu 'Tools/Options' or 'Tools/Internet Options'.
