Starters IT Survival Guide

Overview

New to the University? Just need a refresher? This page has pointers to useful information for starters and people working at a distance.

The University has a number of web-based systems that will need you to have a username and password - if you do not have that, you'll be at a disadvantage - but speak with Personnel and they can reissue those if necessary.

Logging in to certain services involves a 'Domain name' as well as your username and password - the word 'academic'. Here's a page of help on logging in to various University systems

Increasingly, University IT systems need just one username and password - but if you use networked Apple computers while on site, be aware that the username and password for that network won't necessarily be the same as the details issued by Personnel (but you can reset your password yourself so both are the same).

'Mark's Help' Pages

That's what you're using now - a set of IT help pages written for staff. Much of the rest of this page involves links into other pages from this resource to help you find the information you need. There's also a 'Search' and hand built 'A to Z' list on the left ...

Contacting the Helpdesk

When you need IT support because something needs fixing, we've a web-based reporting system called the 'Applications server'. You'll need to log in to it, so if you don't have your details, use the phone instead ...

Telephone +44(1225) 876500 to put yourself in touch with IT helpdesk (that number is staffed during 'Office hours'.)

Car Passes

Arrange one using the Applications Server - you'll need your username and password to log in to it.

Getting Paid

The University uses a web-based system called Liquid Office for pay claims - this can be a bit of a handful until you're used to it, but help's available, here's a link to specific help for part time academic staff and for casual workers, or send me email if things appear not to be working for you. Avoid making your first pay claim close to a payroll cut off date, as the first time you use a system is the time it's least likely to co-operate - leave enough time to sort out any hitches.

IT Training

Use the University's training portal to inform yourself about forthcoming training opportunities including IT training. If you need help with a specific piece of software, get in touch and we can advise.

Using Email

The University runs an email server for staff. From off campus, you've several ways to connect, but the server will not accept connections from email clients. It does offer a web-based view of your email account though, and many people find that sufficient: here's help on getting going with webmail.

If it would be useful to you to use 'Outlook' itself, you can, but this will involve you setting up a VPN connection to the University network first, or as an alternative, there's a terminal server available and you can connect to that.

Finding people's phone numbers

Use the Applications Server to view the University 'phone directory.

It's worth logging in to the Applications server to see what's available - it offers several other services for you.

Minerva: our Web-based VLE

You'll need your username and password, but once you have that, 'Minerva' is straightforward. If you've used 'Blackboard' software before, you'll recognise 'Minerva'. An introductory training session, provided on demand, is highly recommended though. This resource also has help pages on 'Minerva', but do check if there's a 'Minerva' workshop in the offing - if not, request one.
