What is the world wide web?
Think of it this way: a library, an encyclopædia with no one to edit, in collision with a vast collection of peoples private obsessions?
What is the world wide wait?
It worked perfectly before, but ****** H***, what's happened now?
What is the
Internet?
An
Intranet?
An
Extranet?
Say 'The internet', but 'Our intranet', 'My intranet'.
What is the structure of the web?
Where does all this stuff live and who is in charge?
What is a URL?
What is a web address?
What will I find on the web?
How does material find its way onto the web? Is it reliable? In some ways it's like a library, but anyone can easily write a book and put it on the shelves ... the librarians are out to lunch - forever, and the result may just occasionally disappoint ...
How can I search the web?
If the web's like a rapidly growing library, the shelves fill fast ... but in no particular order. Help is at hand though.
How can I cite a reference to material on the web?
Unlike a printed journal, there is no guarantee that an item on the web will still be there in five minutes time ... many people can view a site at once, but the author may be able to change or delete it at any time ...
I need to put something on the web.
What factors should I consider?
What is JISC? UKERNA? JANET?
Where can I find JANET's
'Acceptable use policy'?
